My biggest secret?

Locking in and doing as much as I could before school started! My personal statement for my Comm App took 9 drafts. This is why as a coach who has worked with over 200+ students, I highly recommend getting as much work as you can done now.

Here are 3 strategies to get you started:

FREEWRITING.
Freewriting is the practice of putting pen to paper, setting a timer, and making yourself write until time is up. There shouldn’t be a single moment in which you are not writing. You might be writing utter nonsense—that’s okay. You’re training yourself to ignore the critic inside you and just push through the bad stuff, in order to get to the good stuff. And who knows, there might be some gems inside that trash!

HIGHS & LOWS.
Think about your life’s highest highs and lowest lows. Oftentimes our “victory” moments mean a lot to us because we’ve poured in blood, sweat and tears to work towards a specific outcome. And oftentimes our “darkest night of the soul” moments mean a lot to us because we overcame something difficult; we pulled through and grew as people. These emotional highs and lows are great places to start in terms of your essay; our challenges and struggles shape us into who we are today.

TALKING WITH YOUR LOVED ONES.
Don’t underestimate how powerful it is to connect with those who love and know you! This could be your parent, guardian, best friend, sibling, teacher, etc. Ask them these questions:

What was I like as a kid? Any specific memories come to mind that capture my personality?
How would you describe me now?
What do you think my superpower is?

It’s helpful to brainstorm with our loved ones because they can call out stuff that we don’t see in ourselves!
