Lotus Lab is a generative design exploration by ARTsBIM for Arts, Collaboration, and Innovation hubs, inspired by the lotus flower, a timeless symbol of peace, rebirth, and evolutionary growth.
It draws from the lotus not only in form but also in its adaptability and transformation, applied across the AECO lifecycle of a façade system within Autodesk’s ecosystem.
The process utilizes tools such as Revit, Dynamo, Generative Design in Revit, Autodesk Forma, and Inventor, with plans to integrate Autodesk Platform Services (APS) for enhanced interoperability.
Visualization and presentation are developed using Adobe tools and Twinmotion. The design builds on our extensive experience with large-scale façade projects, including Rosemall, Nashville SC Stadium (Geodis Park), and collaborations with professionals involved in Gensler’s NVIDIA HQ.
Acting as a global peace ambassador, Lotus Lab has been prototyped in Istanbul, Hamburg, and San Francisco. Each version shares a unified design DNA, rooted in the core logic and structure of the Dynamo-Python scripts, while specific parts of the scripts and parameters are customized to adapt to local environmental, regulatory, and urban conditions.
Istanbul embraces sunlight and its heritage architecture; Hamburg responds to sound, energy use, and airport-driven height restrictions; San Francisco adapts to seismic activity, oceanic winds, reduced glazing, and increased verticality. The Istanbul prototype is further advanced in different parts, especially with diamond-pattern curtain walls at LOD 400, enabled by detailed fabrication drawings via highly complex RFAs and Autodesk Inventor workflows.
These contextual variations highlight the core of generative design: a shared logic, uniquely shaped by place. The animation is decorated and synched with a famous classical guitar, Asturias by Isaac Albéniz, played by Ana Vidovic.
