Our conscious perception is that we are seeing the world in real time. We believe that the events we are seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching are all happening right now, but are they? It's a major problem in neuroscience to try and figure out how conscious perception really happens, and timing is likely to be critical. There are delays in the conduction of neural signals. It's just not possible for signals to travel instantaneously, so there will always be a lag between the time at which an event happens and the time at which our brains are able to consciously register the sensations associated with that event. So how does the brain overcome this? How can we ever function in the real world in real time if we're always using old information?

In this video, I describe a recent review in which Hinze Hogendoorn puts forward a new idea about how the brain integrates all the information it has available and uses this to approximate a best guess of the present. The upshot of this is that our conscious experience of the present moment is actually nothing more than a simulated prediction. We never actually experience the present moment directly at all.
