In the darkness of night in September 1885, a terrible event happened to my Great-Great-Grandfather, and his young wife, and their children. A group known as the White Caps, who terrorized Harrison County and southern Indiana visited their home and dragged him outside where they mercilessly beat him, as his wife wailed in anguish and the night was pierced by the frightened screams of his children. They beat this giant of a man with a whip and a brush, and tree limbs, and kicked him with their boots, and spit upon him. They beat him so badly that he became an invalid for the remaining 20 years of his life. His young wife bore the awful burden of having to care for him and their nine children by doing whatever work was available, such as washing clothes and cleaning. In December 1890, their eldest son was killed in a gun accident, supposedly, and this added to her misery. But, she was a strong and determined woman, devoted to the care of family, which she did until her death in 1922, at her home 4 miles south of Corydon. As was written about her in the Corydon Democrat in 1922, by her nephew, "Surely, this is enough to make this mother give up. It would many mothers, but this one was made of sterner stuff. She labored on, doing what she could. As I look back over those years, I wonder how she did it. No one less than the God who kept the widow of old in meal and oil watched and cared for this poor stricken family. And through it all, Aunt Anna never lost her smile. I repeat what I said in the beginning that many good women have lived and died, but none nobler, more self-sacrificing, and heroic than Anna Foster."

It is for her love and dedication that I honor her with this song, Anna's Lament, and I pray that I will meet her one day. The lyrics to the song are included below and are based on the article in the Corydon Democrat when she died.

ANNA'S LAMENT

Verse 1:

How can I look on, my true love this night? My heart wails in anguish, what shall be our plight?
So bruised, and so mangled, what demons have come? Though hell appear, I never will succumb.

Verse 2:
What love and devotion we shared till this day! Sweet were our joys, till the devil had his play!
So peaceful our slumber, so pleasant our dreams, until we heard our precious children’s screams.

Chorus:
Pray I to God, remove now from my heart, this agony and grief I bear, please heal our wounds, I plea.
Pray I to God, restore love’s happy face, restore our children’s hope in life, restore my love to me. Oh, I pray. Oh, I pray.

Verse 3:
I must be strong, though my labors be cruel. Though frail I am, to my fam’ly be true.
Oh, I will have courage, and noble shall be, and smile at life, and my true love, for all eternity.
