South Florida resident Helmuth Beteta spent nearly a month at Alligator Alcatraz, an immigration detention facility he calls inhumane. WGCU anchor and reporter Sandra Viktorova reports on the 23-year-old’s detention, which began when border patrol agents stopped him while riding his bike home in Key West. He believes his detention was racial profiling—because he says he wasn’t cited with any traffic violation. Border Patrol says Beteta overstayed the tourist visa he was granted in 2018. Beteta, who has a Florida driver’s license and a federal work permit, has no criminal record and is scheduled to go to court in 2028 for his political asylum petition. While the Nicaragua native says he never saw physical abuse at the detention facility, he says detainees were exposed to harsh conditions and lacked legal access, which led to some men signing away their rights and ending their immigration process. The state of Florida denies Beteta’s allegations about harsh conditions and told WGCU that the facility meets state and federal detention standards. Beteta worries he could be detained again and has left his Key West community for a more populated part of South Florida.
