20 years of Tzu Chi in the USA - Growing the hope and love --- 8.美國20國際(2)建立制度Growing the hope and love
In 1989, Tzu Chi-US was established under the directorship of Huang Sixian. Growing from a few household tea parties, today the organization has spread to 28 states, supporting 62 liaison offices. After 20 years, beyond establishing an organizational system, Tzu Chi has been working to establish itself both internationally as well as a US organization, while also working to attract youth.
Flooding, mudslides, and sharing
On August 8th, 2009, Typhoon Morakot unleashed flooding and mudslides on Taiwan. The United States Tzu Chi chapter shared the pain.
Tzu Chi-US executive director, Ge Jishe:"As Morakot developed,we called out across the US for donations.By the day after that video conference,we were underway the second day. We slapped together better communications to coordinate the whole organization. Everyone shared what they had and before a month was up, we had sent out 9 million USD."
The importance of good phone lines
The United States covers a huge area, with Tzu Chi offices all over. So video and phone conferences are extremely important and have helped create a solid organizational structure.
Tzu Chi-US administrative secretary, Huang Hankui:"One could say the key to creating an organizational system would be if future Tzu Chi is able to work peacefully here in the U.S.A, for a hundred, thousand, or even ten thousand years. For that, we need a solid organization, which means a clear direction. So for now, we should continually progress, and with stability."
More than just growing
Beyond building up the organization, Director Ge Jishe has taken as his priorities Americanization, Internationalization, and "Tzu Chi"-ization as his top three priorities. Off these, propagating Tzu Chi is the most important.
Tzu Chi-US executive director, Ge Jishe:"So how can we make it more lasting? By helping the brothers and sisters to grasp a clearer certainty of the Master's ideas. With a clear course to travel, adapting to America or internationally will be no problem."
Mostly ethnic Chinese, but that's changing
For the moment, 97 percent of US Tzu Chi are ethnic Chinese. Many large events are held in Chinese. With the establishment of a dual-language volunteer training course, the Americanization process is moving forward, step by step.
Tzu Chi-US executive director, Ge Jishe:"Tzu Chi's spirit and the Master's Dharma are all transmitted in English. It's how we pass these things on, and will be forever important: how should the next generation pass the torch and how can Tzu Chi-US continue to achieve its aims? These will be the next important area to work on."
