Celosia, commonly known as cockscomb or woolflower, is a vibrant and unique genus of flowers belonging to the amaranth family (Amaranthaceae). Native to tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas, they are prized worldwide for their striking, unusual flower heads and brilliant, long-lasting colors.

Celosia flowers are known for their dazzling spectrum of colors, including fiery reds, bright oranges, vivid yellows, deep burgundies, hot pinks, and magenta. The foliage is typically a fresh green, though some varieties feature attractive bronze or burgundy leaves that provide a beautiful contrast to the blooms.

The flowers are most famous for their distinctive textures and shapes, which are generally grouped into three main types:

Cockscomb (Celosia argentea var. cristata): This group features densely packed flower heads that are wavy and convoluted, resembling the comb on a rooster's head—hence the name "cockscomb." The texture is often described as velvety or brain-like.

Plume (Celosia argentea var. plumosa): Plume celosias produce soft, feathery, flame-like flower spikes. These upright, fluffy plumes add a striking vertical accent and a softer texture to gardens and arrangements.

Spike or Wheat (Celosia argentea var. spicata): This variety has more slender, cylindrical, or spike-like flower heads, often compared to shafts of wheat. They tend to have a more delicate, wildflower-like appearance.

Celosias are popular as ornamental plants in garden beds and borders, where they provide a powerful burst of color from summer until the first frost. They are also highly valued as cut flowers, both fresh and dried. Their sturdy stems and incredibly long vase life make them a favorite for bouquets. When dried, they retain their shape and intense color exceptionally well, making them a staple in everlasting arrangements.
