Compass Automation designed, built, and installed an Inspection & Robotic Tray Loading System for a customer supplying automotive parts at a cycle time of a part every 2.89 seconds.

The machine consists of a manually loaded bowl feeder that orients the parts and brings them to an escapement. When parts arrive at the escapement they are engaged with a gripper at the in-feed nest to hold the part while a part is pushed forward to a proximity sensor that initiates a dual slide mounted gripper. The gripper advances to the part, picks it, and places the part on to a 12 station index table.

The table indexes the part to the next station where a Cognex camera in combination with a rotating arbor inspects for chips in the recess of the part. The next station uses a Cognex camera to inspect the part for chatter, light anodizing, and marks on the top face. The part is then brought to a flipping station where a gripper grabs the part, lifts it out of the nest, flips it upside down and places it back into the nest.

Another inspection takes place at the next station where a Cognex camera in combination with a rotating arbor inspects the part for roundness. The next station uses a Cognex camera in combination with a rotating arbor to inspect the part for nicks. The part then moves to the last inspection station where a Cognex camera inspects the part for chatter, light anodizing, and marks on the bottom face.

When the parts are through all of the operations of the index table, a Fanuc robot will palletize all of the passing parts into dunnage trays while all of the failing parts are sorted into chutes based on failure. The trays are loaded into the system via a cart and a tray loading electric actuator and a pneumatic actuator. The electric actuator lifts the stack so a gripper mounted pneumatic actuator can grip the tray and transfer it to the loading position. Once trays are full, a new tray is loaded pushing the completed tray down a roller conveyor.

This Compass Automation system made it possible for the end user to meet the standards set by their customer for complete inspection of the part at the required production rate.
