Esmeralda saves him, offering shelter for the night and accepting his proposal of marriage to protect him, though her heart remains distant. Meanwhile, Frollo's obsession with Esmeralda grows, tearing him apart as he battles between his religious vows and forbidden desires.

Under Frollo's orders, Quasimodo attempts to kidnap Esmeralda, only to be thwarted by Phoebus, who becomes her hero. Captured and punished publicly, Quasimodo endures the crowd's scorn until Esmeralda's act of compassion — offering him water — kindles a deep and unspoken devotion within him.
