Fraction as a part of the whole.

A fraction as a part of the whole means dividing something (a whole object, a group, or a quantity) into equal parts and considering some of those parts.
A fraction has two numbers:
• Numerator (top number): shows how many parts are taken.
• Denominator (bottom number): shows how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
Example 1:
If you cut a pizza into 4 equal slices and eat 1 slice, the fraction is:
1/4
This means one part out of four equal parts of the whole pizza.
Example 2:
A chocolate bar is divided into 8 equal pieces. If you eat 3 pieces, the fraction is:
3/8
This means three parts out of eight equal parts of the whole chocolate bar.
Key point: Fractions always represent equal parts of a whole.
