Gold Star Spouses Day is dedicated to the recognition of those who lost their loved ones in service to this great nation.

This tradition dates back to World War I, when families would hang a blue star banner for a loved one serving overseas. If that family member made the ultimate sacrifice, the star was changed to gold, alerting the community what the family lost in service to their country.

Military spouses play a pivotal role in supporting their partners – lending stability, comfort, and bravery on the home front so their significant others can defend our nation when duty calls. They are selfless, courageous, and are the unsung heroes of the Armed Forces. And for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and lost a partner while he or she was in the line of duty, we honor these Gold Star Spouses each year on 5 April.

Our Concert Band and Soldiers’ Chorus perform “Mansions of the Lord”, a peaceful hymn for those who have passed on in service to our nation, and a comfort to the loving spouses they left behind. The Military Funeral Honors seen here were performed by the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard).
