CNJ 113: A Schuylkill County Christmas

In the winter of 2023, Central Railroad of New Jersey 113 was once again under steam for the Reading & Northern's very busy holiday season, pulling Santa Claus Trains from Minersville to Schuylkill Haven and back. The stocky locomotive worked up the mountainous grades of the coal mining region, giving passengers unique views of its frosty rivers and valleys.

The Central Railroad of New Jersey 113 was built by the American Locomotive Company in June 1923, and is classified as a B7 0-6-0 switcher. She was built for purely yard service, constructed with a Wooten firebox in order to burn poorer grades of coal. By 1945, the locomotive was reclassified as an 6S46 and in 1951, 113 was taken out of service. In 1953, the 113 was sold to Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Company, where she continued to operate for another 7 years, being the last CNJ steam locomotive to operate. In 1980, the locomotive was donated to the Historic Red Clay Valley Inc where she remained until she was moved to Minersville in 1986. Restoration work began in 1999, with the locomotive being fully completed in 2012.
