In contrast to William Byrd’s version of O Salutaris, Japanese composer Ko Matsushita uses the same text but from a different cultural context. After converting to Catholicism he set several traditional liturgical texts to music. This expressive setting draws parallels from the traditional text to religious persecution in Japan, and to the pain in our world today. Both of these settings spanning 400 years encourage us to be the “saving victims” for each other. In the words of Ko Matsushita we should be “Connecting the World with Songs of Love.”

O salutaris Hostia, quae coeli pandis ostium: bella premunt hostilia, da robur, fer auxilium.
O saving victim who opens the gate of heaven, hostile wars press on us: give strength and bring aid.

Uni trinoque Domino sit sempiterna gloria, qui vitam sine termino nobis donet in patria. Amen.
To the Lord, three in one, be everlasting glory, for life without end he gives us in his Kingdom. Amen.
-William Byrd
