Climate Change: Threatening Indian Monsoons

Описание к видео Climate Change: Threatening Indian Monsoons

Climate change is no longer a myth or speculation. It impacts all spheres, onshore or offshore, mountainous, coastal areas or plains. The cryosphere and oceans support unique habitats and are interconnected through the global exchange of water, energy, and carbon dioxide.

The trends in the Arctic sea-ice cover in March show a decline of about 2.6 percent per decade. The Arctic sea ice has thinned, with a loss of multiyear sea ice amounting to nearly 90 percent loss of five-year-old ice. Arctic sea ice can influence the regional monsoons through teleconnection patterns.

With increased melting of the sea ice, more fresh water will be introduced into the North Atlantic, altering the tropospheric temperatures and weakening the thermohaline circulation. This, in turn, would affect the Indian summer monsoon adversely.

Listen in to Dr. R Krishnan's talk titled "Climate Change and the Arctic Sea Ice: Lessons Learned and Future Strategies" at SaGAA 7, held on April 27-28, 2023.
