This June, I had the honor of participating in the monitoring of nesting birds at the Lednické Ponds Nature Reserve, in collaboration with CHKO Pálava and Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic 🌞

A record number of various waders nested on the exposed bottom of the Mlýnský Pond, whose water level was lowered by 1.3 meters compared to normal. In addition to Northern Lapwings, Little Ringed Plovers, Black-winged Stilts, and Common Redshanks, at least 38 pairs of Pied Avocets settled here. This is an extraordinary sight in the Czech Republic, so take a look at this short video to see what these birds look like 🐣

The nesting waders were carefully looked after throughout the season by professional ornithologist Vlastimil Sajfrt. Besides constant supervision of the water level, he also tested the use of an electric fence for the first time this year, which protected the birds from ground predators such as foxes, martens, and wild boars. The effort was crowned with unprecedented success 💪
