Let's use peer reviewed science to understand the role of fecal aerosolization and other fecal transmission modes for the novel coronavirus. I also explain what we know from wastewater surveillance.

SARS-CoV-2 has been detected in poop. In this video, I explain how our poop may be one of the ways the virus is being transmitted and how wastewater can serve as an early warning sign to outbreaks. I review the scientific literature to answer these questions: Is SARS-CoV-2 detected in human feces? Is the virus detected in stool samples viable, or infectious? Is the virus enteric? Has infectious virus been isolated from stool samples? What are possible transmission routes, such as fecal-oral and fecal aerosolization, for the virus? And how can we use wastewater-based surveillance to foresee community outbreaks?
