The streets are quiet. The fever of summer has faded. Mismatched lights flicker in the exposed stairs that run up and down the bones of the city. I think I just saw another window go dark. Do you think anybody notices this window? They won’t see much, just a blur of white drop ceiling and fluorescent lights, cubicles, and inoffensive carpet. Of course, they would have to be looking from one particular rooftop, and I never have seen anyone leaning on the off-white peeling paint of its rusty fence. Of the world’s first known quintuplets to survive to adulthood, only Anette remains alive today. In the summer of 1954, Emilie Dionne, the smallest of the sisters, died as a result of an epileptic fit. She was only twenty years old. The young woman had entered a convent as a catholic nun before continuing on to her eternal reward. The surviving sisters were shocked, confronting death after a miraculous life. Marie passed away in 1970 from a blood clot in the brain. Yvonne died of cancer in 2001, and Cecile reposed at a hospital in Montreal in the summer of 2025.
