Thanks to the John C. Bock Foundation about two acres of the mature oak woodland habitat on the eastern edge of Patrick Marsh have been restored. 

Groundswell Conservancy identified that the future trail corridor on the east side of the marsh had mature oak trees that needed saving from aggressive trees and non-native shrubs. The area was so overgrown that contractors with chainsaws were necessary as first responders. The grant from the John C. Bock Foundation allowed us to hire Quercus Land Stewardship Services to open up the oak canopy and understory. Check out the time lapse video of the work done under these majestic oaks. 

Volunteers followed up this work with a native species planting. They and the prairie partner crew will continue to maintain the trail corridor and character of the oak woodland into the future. A sign will be installed to educate passers-by of the progress and importance of this work.

Many of the trees in this oak woodland can be seen in the earliest Wisconsin aerial photos (1937). With the success of this project, these grand oaks have been given an opportunity to breathe new life now that their canopy competitors have been removed. The next generation can now walk the trail and enjoy their awe-inspiring stature.
