Neil Diamond, Muhammad Ali, Michael Fox, Robin Williams all shared one thing: Parkinson's disease. More research is suggesting trichloroethylene as a possible trigger - how can you limit exposure?

We'll discuss the story of a patient for anesthesia, the potential causes of Parkinson's disease (PD), the symptoms of the disease, the potential triggers of PD, and why it's crucial to focus on prevention.

PD is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that affects movement. The main symptoms of PD include tremors, bradykinesia, and rigidity (cogwheel). However, the disease can also cause mood disturbances, dementia, psychosis, sleep disturbances, and autonomic dysfunction.

Many well-known figures have been affected by PD, including Neil Diamond, Muhammad Ali, Robin Williams, and Brian Grant. The prevalence of PD has led many people to wonder what the potential causes of the disease are. Some research suggests that chemical exposures may be a significant factor in the development of PD.

The patient story I share was about a patient for anesthesia who was at peace during the procedure, but they wished that prevention was known to future generations. Chemical exposures have been linked to a number of health problems, including PD. Studies have linked exposures to certain chemicals like contaminated meperidine and trichloroethylene (TCE) with an increased risk of developing PD. Meperidine, which is a pain medication with abuse potential, has been shown to trigger PD in some patients due to contaminants in illegal production. TCE, a solvent commonly used in the manufacturing process, has been linked to an increased risk of developing PD as well as kidney cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and liver cancer.

It's crucial to focus on PD prevention because once symptoms develop, it's often too late to slow down the progression of the disease. While genetics can play a role in the development of PD, it's estimated that genetics account for only around 15% of cases. The rest of the cases are believed to be caused by environmental factors, such as chemical exposures. Pesticides have long been thought to be a risk factor for PD, but recent studies have suggested that the risk may be present even in urban areas due to contaminated water, soil, and indoor air pollution.

One reason why it's important to focus on PD prevention is that exposures to certain chemicals can damage the mitochondria in the body. Mitochondria are organelles in cells that are responsible for producing energy. Damage to the mitochondria can lead to a range of health problems, including PD.

The potential exposures to chemicals that have been linked to PD are numerous. For example, one-third of the drinking water in the United States is believed to be contaminated with TCE. At Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, the levels of TCE in the water were found to be 280 times higher than what is considered safe. Other potential exposures include dry cleaning, refrigerants, cleaning electronics, and degreasing.

In conclusion, PD is a degenerative disorder that affects movement, and exposure to certain chemicals has been linked to an increased risk of developing the disease. PD prevention is crucial because once symptoms develop, it's often too late to slow down the progression of the disease. Potential exposures to chemicals linked to PD are numerous, and they include contaminated water, soil, and indoor air pollution, as well as dry cleaning, refrigerants, cleaning electronics, and degreasing. We hope this video has been informative and helpful in raising awareness about the importance of PD prevention.
