So we drove next towards Wanaka, taking in the Blue Pools and the walking tracks of the same name. Far and away the most popular walk in the Makaroa area is the 750m 30 minute return track to the luminously Blue Pools. This where the Makaroa and Blue rivers converge into one glorious colour of see through blue water that you will ever see. The water is so clear you can sometimes see Trout seemingly suspended in the water. We had a choice of 4 tracks, ranging from a 1.6km 45min walk to a 75km walk named Young River Link Track that takes 2hours. Or if you are a serious walker/hiker there was the aptly named Young Hut track that takes you over 24km of rainforests and deep bush cumulating in a 7/9hr hike…….too long for us with no proper toilets for me taking my regular pee breaks lol!!!!
The car park was large with a decent “long drop” to use before your walk started. It was certainly a popular stop off for the reasons we were about to see. Don’t drive pass this amazing place, go for a walk and take heaps of photos for Insta!
