The celebrated stage director Marshall W. Mason discusses his career directing for the Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway stage.
Mason, who began his career in 1964, at the legendary Caffe Cino, was named by the American Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation as one of the most influential and innovative directors of the century.
He directed twelve productions on Broadway, four of which earned Tony Awards (Lanford Wilson's "Talley’s Folly," "Fifth of July," "Burn This," "Redwood Curtain.") He has been nominated five times for the Tony Award as Best Director, including the interviewer William M. Hoffman's "As Is.")
A founding Artistic Director of New York’s seminal Circle Repertory Company, he was acclaimed by the "New York Times" as “the chief provider of new American plays.” Resident playwrights at Circle Rep included Pulitzer Prize-winners Lanford Wilson, Tennessee Williams, Sam Shepard, David Mamet, Marsha Norman and Jules Feiffer; as well as Tony and Obie Award-winners Craig Lucas, Jon Robin Baitz, William Mastrosimone, Albert Innaurato, Bill C. Davis, Jim Leonard, Corrine Jacker, John Bishop and Herb Gardner.
The Circle Rep acting company included Academy Award-winners William Hurt, Kathy Bates and Beatrice Straight; movie stars Christopher Reeve, Jeff Daniels, Farley Granger, Brad Dourif; Lindsay Crouse, Mary MacDonald and Robert McNaughton; Tony Award-winners Judith Ivey, Judd Hirsch, Debra Monk, Swoosie Kurtz, Barnard Hughes and Fritz Weaver.
In 1999 Marshall W. Mason received a Mr. Abbott Special Millennium Award that named him "one of the most innovative and influential directors of the twentieth century." He is also the author of "Creating Life on Stage," published in 2006, an influential book
on directing.
