Overview

The Porsche Macan wasted little time establishing itself as the performance benchmark of the compact luxury SUV segment when it debuted a decade ago. Though the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 and their respective sporting variants beat it to market, the Macan's balance of performance and driver involvement set a new standard. Now aging gracefully, the Macan still delivers the goods but faces a new competitor from under the same roof in the form of the Macan EV. While that model is built on an entirely new platform, the gasoline-powered Macan remains on its current one and continues to deliver impeccable handling and the classic Porsche vibe. It's powered by either a 261-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine in the base model or the 375-hp twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6 in the Macan S. (We review the potent 434-hp Macan GTS separately.) The chassis does its part, serving up confidence-inspiring handling, braking, and direct steering worthy of the Porsche name. Sure, it trails its segment competitors in cargo- and rear-passenger space, and its infotainment might feel dated, but the Macan more than makes up for those shortcomings with an extra helping of that secret sauce that makes a Porsche a delight to drive down a twisty two-lane or navigate urban chicanes. By blending sports-sedan driving dynamics with a dose of SUV practicality, the Macan earned its spot on our 10Best Trucks list for 2025. As one of our favorites in its segment, it also earned a spot on our Editors' Choice list for 2025.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The base turbo four-cylinder feels sprightly around town, but the Macan really comes alive with the twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6–powered S model. Quickness is important in a crossover with sporting intentions, but we wouldn't be nearly as impressed with the Macan if it weren't for its all-around competence on the road. It feels remarkably like a sports sedan, and the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic delivers rapid shifts worthy of the chassis and turbocharged engines. The ride is wonderfully damped and carefully controlled, and it's rare for a jolt from the pavement to throw the Macan off course. The steering is a tad lighter than it is in Porsche's sports cars, but it's still micrometer-accurate and pleasantly tactile.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Macan's standard interior fittings are a disappointment in a crossover of this price and provenance, and it's expensive to outfit one in a manner that befits the Porsche crest. There's also less space for back-seat passengers in the Macan than in most competitors. The power-adjustable seats for the driver and front passenger, while comfortable, are the only pieces of standard interior equipment that feel luxurious. You could have the whole interior draped in leather, which would partly address the issue, but Porsche—living up to its price-gouging reputation—requires an extra $2230 just to cover the dashboard and doors in cowhide. A puny cargo hold and small interior cubbies make the Macan one of the least practical vehicles in the compact SUV segment. But when has buying a Porsche ever been a rational choice? We fit six carry-on bags behind the rear bench seat and 16 with the rear seat folded, which should be enough for most people who fall in love with this spunky SUV speed merchant.
