The story of the Cretan Bull begins with King Minos of Crete seeking a sign of his right to rule by requesting Poseidon's aid. Poseidon sent a magnificent white bull from the sea, expecting it to be sacrificed in his honor.

Enchanted by the bull's beauty, Minos kept it and sacrificed a different bull, angering Poseidon. As punishment, Poseidon made Minos's wife, Pasiphae, fall in love with the bull. Pasiphae mated with the bull, resulting in the birth of the Minotaur, a creature with the body of a man and the head of a bull.

To conceal this monstrous offspring, Minos had the craftsman Daedalus construct a labyrinth to imprison the Minotaur.
