The Center for Early Childhood Education at Eastern Connecticut State University is pleased to announce the results of its 2019 TIMPANI Toy Study.

Toys are a fundamental part of children’s play, which is so important for development. Toys, in a way, are a research tool that allow us to kind of peer into children’s young developing brains to see what’s going on in there.

This video presents the findings of the 2019 TIMPANI Toy Study - a study on how toys affect preschool children's play and learning. The study looks at toys that promote creativity, toys that promote problem-solving, toys that promote critical thinking, toys that promote social interaction, and toys that promote language. This year's study found that waffleblocks, a construction toy, best supported children's critical thinking, problem-solving and engineering skills. A play puppet theatre best supported children's social interaction and verbalization. Family Counters, a set of plastic people, best supported children's creativity and verbalization. Overall, the study supported previous research findings that replica play toys are good toys for supporting learning.
