Athletics play an important part of many students’ education. These student-athletes are impacted by teammates, staff, and (most profoundly) by coaches. Emily Fox-Million, a former student-athlete and current journalist, has experienced many different types of coaching throughout her tenure as an athlete. During middle school, she had the unfortunate experience of dealing with an abusive basketball coach. In her talk, Emily examines the different types of coaching styles and advocates for coaches to adopt a holistic approach. Emily Fox-Million is 18 and a senior at Fort Collins High School. She is committed to making consistent and positive change in her local community and spends much of her time active in more than ten clubs at school. Emily is a former student athlete, having played 3 very different sports for 13 years. She is now, though, busier than ever as a student body president and editor-in-chief for her school newspaper. She holds 6 state titles, and one national title in competitive feature, opinion writing, and photojournalism. Emily plans to go to school to pursue journalism and actively live by her mentor’s words: “Be a voice for the voiceless.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
