The ever-changing dynamics of the UAE’s diplomatic relations had recently been gambling with Israel and the so-deemed historical Abraham Accords. Nearly 3 years after the UAE’s normalization agreement with Israel, sources revealed that tensions between the two sides had been rising

The situation was also getting complicated with another signatory of the peace deal, Bahrain. The Gulf states soured on the agreement as Israel intensified conflict with Palestine. Sources revealed that the Emirates expressed its “frustration in high-level contacts with Israel”

The relations soured over concerns about Israel’s human rights violations against Palestinians and their unchecked expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank. Bahrain also “outlined its disappointed” out of similar concerns. The U.S.-mediated Abraham Accords were expected to bring regional peace.

Instead, the violence between Israel and Palestine escalated. The deteriorating ties between the UAE and Israel saw some planned investments stalled. It included a $2bn acquisition of Israel’s natural-gas producer, NewMed Energy, by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and BP Plc.

The deal was expected to be finalized by March 2023, but was at a standstill. An association of Emirati firms led by sovereign wealth fund, ADQ, also called off a plan to buy a controlling stake in Israel’s Phoenix Holdings Ltd. The rising tensions jeopardized Washington’s plans to include Saudi Arabia in the accord.

Although the UAE’s “frustration” cited Israel’s human rights violations against Palestinians, it depicted the Emirates’ hypocrisy. When the UAE and Bahrain signed Abraham Accords, they faced a backlash from the Arab public opinion.

The deal was lauded by Israel as it kept Israel’s peace with Palestine separate. Even though the UAE has now condemned Israel’s offensive publically, it is anticipating Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to attend the COP28 summit in Abu Dhabi.
