Описание к видео Life with out digital media for one week

The purpose of One Week without Digital Media is to show to what extent the average person is wired into technology and dependent on their devices. In addition, I wanted to show what we have been missing out on by looking down at our phones instead of up at the real world. What you see in this documentary is what happens when you take away digital technology from someone who uses technology less than average, which goes to show the modesty of the experiment on the severity of the status quo of the issue. You can see how she would adapt for one week’s time to this old timey circumstance in or fast passed modern world.
Although the issues of technology addiction are far greater in severity and acknowledged as a societal problem in places like Japan and South Korea, the issues we face here are heading in the same direction. Frontline found that the average American teen spends more than 50 hours a week using digital media. That’s over a full workweek. That may seem like a lot, but the habits of many Americans pail in comparison to the habits of many Koreans. In Seoul, South Korea, some teens will spend more than fifty hours at a time playing video game marathons. It is common for teens to go to Internet cafes and play for 10-15 hours at a time. It is common for teens to go long hours without food or water and develop severe attention deficit disorders, eye damage, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Because of this epidemic, the nation has acknowledged technology and computer addiction as a psychiatric disorder and has many rehab facilities dedicated to combatting the issue. According to CBS, in South Korea, 90% of kids use the Internet daily. Of the population of kids that use the Internet daily, 10 to 15% of them are considered to be at the high risk of being classified as addiction.
For obvious reasons most people from their nations would not deny technology to be an issue. But here in America the opinion on the issue varies more and it varies more because although America is considered a very tech savvy nation, it is still years behind others in the growth curve of our increased dependency, increased demand for constant digital stimulus, and our increased addiction to technology. Many Americans don’t see technology as something you can be addicted to. To the Doubters I would ask, why, when you are 23 times more likely to get in a car accident if texting, according to the New York Times, do people still text and drive all the time? Technology is designed to be inherently so compelling to use and very helpful in our daily lives to the point where we are willing to risk our lives to use it. The documentary explores an example of how the average technology user comes to grips with the creativity they have been missing out on by using technology and in effect how do you balance technology use so that you are not out casting your self from society but at the same time, not turning yourself into a total zombie.
In South Korea, all students at a young age take a computer education course that teaches kids how to use computers, but also how to use them responsibly so that they do not consume all of their time. This form of education that teaches kids how to balance technology in their lives is exactly what American schools needs. Our education system should be taking proactive steps towards addressing the issue before we need rehab facilities like the east does. But before we even make changes to or education system, which is equally as powerful but far simpler, would be to take a look at our own habits with technology and decide if we need to rebalance the role of technology in are own lives.
