When ear wax builds up and occludes, or blocks, the ear canal, it can affect your hearing. One of the ways we remove problematic ear wax is using micro suction.

Micro suction is performed under magnification using a low pressure medical suction device. Microsuction comfortable, safe, and noninvasive. There are no liquids used in the ear canal and we have a clear view, under magnification, of the ear canal, allowing safe and effective removal of the ear wax. The procedure usually takes just a few minutes. In the case of hardened ear wax, we might advise softening agents to use for up to 4 days prior to the procedure.

In some cases, mechanical (or manual) removal using stainless steel curette is more appropriate. In other cases, irrigation may work well. Irrigation uses water to continuously flush the ear until the blockage comes loose and flows out. All of these procedures are to be performed by your audiologist, or your personal physician, and should not be attempted at home outside of medical supervision.
