⚡ Korean Scientists Build Battery-Killer Supercapacitor That Charges in a Flash
Scientists at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) have developed a groundbreaking supercapacitor that could outperform traditional batteries. Unlike batteries that rely on chemical reactions and degrade over time, supercapacitors store energy through charge separation, allowing for instant charging and extremely long lifespans — up to 100,000+ cycles.
However, traditional supercapacitors suffer from low energy density, limiting their use in devices that require long-term power. The KIST team solved this by combining single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with polyaniline (PANI), a conductive polymer. This hybrid material stores more energy while retaining the benefits of supercapacitors — fast charging, durability, and safety.
The new supercapacitor is also flexible, highly durable, and performs well under high voltage, making it ideal for wearables, electric vehicles, and flexible electronics. Researchers even created film-like structures for easier, low-cost production.
This innovation could lead to phones that charge in seconds, EVs with longer lifespans, and devices that don’t rely on lithium batteries. If commercialized, this technology might soon revolutionize energy storage — and change how we power our world.
Published in the journal Composites, this breakthrough hints at a flash-charged future.
