Everyone recognizes this jagged rock from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but the real history of Skellig Michael is far more intense than fiction. We tend to picture a peaceful, permanent community of monks living here for centuries, but given the brutal Atlantic storms and lack of resources, was that even physically possible?

In this short, we explore the theory that Skellig might have been a seasonal "Green Martyrdom" site rather than a permanent home.

Here are a few incredible details we couldn't fit in the video:
The Viking Raids: Even on this terrifyingly isolated rock, the monks weren't safe. The Annals of the Four Masters record that Vikings attacked in 823 AD, kidnapping the Abbot Etgal, who tragically starved to death in captivity.

The "Other" Monastery: While tourists visit the main beehive huts, there is an even more extreme "Hermitage" on the South Peak. To get there, a monk had to climb a vertical rock chimney called the "Needle's Eye" to reach a tiny ledge hanging over the ocean.

The Abandonment: The site was eventually abandoned around the 12th or 13th century. Theories suggest the climate got colder and stormier, forcing the community to move permanently to Ballinskelligs Abbey on the mainland.
