Phillip Sear plays the first piece from a 1923 set - 'Meadowland and Mountain: 4 Pastorals' - by the British composer Ernest Austin (1874-1947).

Ernest Austin (1874-1947) was a self-taught English composer, and brother of the baritone and composer Frederick Austin - who is best known for his performing version of the Beggar's Opera. Ernest—who was also an occasional singer—wrote orchestral works, many songs and some piano pieces. He is perhaps best remembered for a 2 3/4 hour work in 12 parts for organ with narrator based on the 'Pilgrim's Progress'. This piece opens and closes with evocations of church bells, and includes an interesting harmonisation of 'The First Nowell'.

This piece is dedicated to Kathleen Boland (also the dedicatee of Austin's 'Dream Themes'), who seems to have been a minor lyricist and composer.
