Thousands of Peruvians took to the streets of Lima on Wednesday (October 15) in the first major protest against interim President Jose Jeri, which escalated into violent clashes with riot police.

The demonstrations, organized through social media by civil groups, labor unions, transport workers, and members of Generation Z, centered on Plaza San Martín in downtown Lima. Protesters demanded action against rising crime rates, the closure of Congress, and even called for a constituent assembly to rewrite the constitution.

Protesters set fire to fences and hurled molotov cocktails, fireworks, and other objects at police lines. Riot police responded with tear gas as they moved to disperse the crowds.

Hundreds of protesters marched toward the Congress building, carrying banners opposing the new government. The protest took place on the sixth day since the impeachment of President Dina Boluarte, who was replaced by Jerí, who was first in line to succeed him as head of Congress

On Tuesday (October 14), Jeri appointed his new cabinet of ministers, led by former judge and conservative politician Ernesto Álvarez.
