After the Second World War, Germany lay in ruins. There were not enough workers to rebuild the country – and so began one of the greatest social experiments in Europe: the era of the guest workers.

Millions of people from Turkey, Italy, Greece, and Spain came to Germany between 1955 and 1973 to work. They helped create the economic miracle, building roads, houses, and factories – and at the same time, they brought their own culture, food, and music with them.

But their lives were often not easy. Many lived in crowded dormitories, far away from their families.
Still, many of them stayed – and the phrase “We came to work” turned into “We stayed to live.”

This video tells the story of these people – with images, emotions, and facts.
