In this video, I will explain the major parts of the brain, which include cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem (midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata), and diencephalon (thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus), the role of longitudinal fissure, transverse cerebral fissure, central sulcus, falx cerebri, tentorium cerebelli. I will discuss the five lobes (frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, insula) in each cerebral hemisphere and provide examples of a few important areas in the cerebral cortex of each lobe such as primary motor cortex, primary somatosensory cortex, primary auditory cortex, olfactory cortex, gustatory cortex, primary visual cortex. I will locate the four ventricles of brain (lateral, third, fourth), and pathways connecting the ventricles (interventricular foramina, aqueduct of midbrain, median and lateral apertures), the formation and circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid. In diencephalon, I will elaborate on some important functions of thalamus, hypothalamus, and two major nuclei in the epithalamus (pineal gland and habenular nuclei). In brainstem, I will explain some of the important nuclei in medulla oblongata (medullary rhythmicity center, cardiovascular center, deglutition center, reflex centers to control vomiting, coughing, sneezing, hiccupping), in pons (pontine respiratory group, pontine nuclei), in midbrain (superior and inferior colliculi, substantia nigra, red nuclei), and explain the major function of reticular activating system (RAS). In cerebellum, I will explain the major motor and non-motor activities of the cerebellar neurons, the role of cerebellar peduncles, the 3 lobes found in each cerebellar hemispheres (anterior, posterior, flocculonodular) and the anatomical structures such as folia, arbor vitae, and vermis. At the end, I will explain the origin and attachments of the twelve pairs of cranial nerves (olfactory/I, optic/II, oculomotor/III, trochlear/IV, trigeminal/V, abducens/VI, facial/VII, vestibulocochlear/VIII, glossopharyngeal/IX, vagus/X, accessory/IX, hypoglossal/XII).
