This is City of Tears.

To me, this was one of the most striking pieces of music I encountered when I was making my way through Hollow Knight. It still is a very special piece of music to me and is one of my favorites from the soundtrack.

Christopher Larkin has started to become one of my favorite video game music composers. I think the reason why is because his music is actually very similar to modern classical music. His music has that "intellectual" creation process that classical music often has. He does many things in the Hollow Knight soundtrack that I have not really heard many other VGM composers do. For example that section starting at around 1:45 has a really interesting polyrhythm between the very lowest notes in my LH and the melody/accompaniment above it. Because of this polyrhythm it took me a while to learn this section because those notes in my LH pinky I need to play in very weird places within the beats... Mr. Larkin does these weird polyrhythm and polymeter things in much of the Hollow Knight soundtrack which is something I haven't heard much of in other game soundtracks. His music can often get on the edge of being nontonal sometimes as well. I know some of you may not understand what I'm taking here, it's music theory things, what I mean is that Christopher Larkin uses some very advance techniques of music writing :) haha
