This really excellent portable gramophone was made by 'His Master's Voice'

This is a de-luxe variant in green leathercloth, a rare colour. It was very popular in its day and now due to its superb playing quality. HMV 102 is still widely recognised as marking the pinnacle of portable gramophone design. It remained in production, with minor changes, from 1931 until the late 1950s.

This model is finished in green Rexine leathercloth with a brown motor board, the internal fittings are chromium plated.

It has got an automatic or manual start/stop, via selector lever. Single spring motor with the 5a soundbox and very proportional tone arm and horn system.

Offered with it's original invoice showing that it was purchased in London on January 23rd 1940 for the sum of £4-17-6, (four pounds seventeen shillings and sixpence) and a manual for the HMV 102.

His Master's Voice, abbreviated HMV is a trademark in the music business, and for many years was the name of a large record label. The name was coined in 1899 as the title of a painting of the dog Nipper listening to a wind-up gramophone. In the photograph on which the painting was based, the dog was listening to a phonograph cylinder. This image comes from a painting by English artist Francis Barraud, A.R.A. and titled His Master's Voice.
