The Mbuluzi Ecosystems Restoration Project (MERP), implemented by the Eswatini National Trust Commission (ENTC) with funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and technical support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), facilitated a learning exchange visit that brought the Lomahasha Natural Resources Management Committee (NRMC) to Sigcaweni, in collaboration with the Eswatini Forestry Department.

This exchange visit provided an opportunity for the Lomahasha community to learn directly from Sigcaweni’s successful transition from invasive alien plant species (IAPS) infestation to productive land use, achieved through community-led ecosystem restoration and coffee production. The site demonstrated how restoring degraded landscapes can go hand-in-hand with sustainable livelihood opportunities, while supporting the recovery of indigenous vegetation.

The exchange reflects MERP’s vision that Lomahasha can adapt and apply these proven practices to restore degraded land, strengthen community resilience, and improve livelihoods across the Mbuluzi River Basin.
