Like clockwork, I receive at least one phone call a week asking, “Do you do the HCG diet?”
“Absolutely not,” I reply without hesitation.
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone found in pregnant women’s urine and produced by the placenta. Both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are issuing seven joint warning letters to firms marketing over-the-counter HCG drug products labeled as homeopathic for weight loss.
Why? It’s an unsafe, fraudulent scam. These unapproved “homeopathic” HCG drug products are still found on websites and in retail stores as oral drops, pellets and sprays and have not been cleared for safety or effectiveness. Other versions of this diet use the real prescription drug HCG, even though it has been associated with manic episodes, heart arrhythmia’s and even death! Crazy enough, people following the cracked diet are even injecting themselves with needles… every day.
The FDA and FTC will “monitor” the firms responses to the warning letters and take further action as needed. “Firms that do not correct the violations may face enforcement action, possible legal penalties, or criminal prosecution,” its website stated.
Just last year, Dr. Oz featured Sheri L. Emma, M.D., and creator of Dr. Emma’s HCG Protocol, to discuss HCG injections for weight loss. Dr. Oz wanted to open the controversial topic up for discussion, but did not take a stance on supporting or not supporting the “new” HCG diet plan.
“So, the most pressing question is: Do HCG injections work for weight loss? My answer is yes, absolutely,” Dr. Emma stated in her article “The New HCG Diet.” This is rebutted quite succinctly by Drs. Pieter Cohen (of Harvard Medical School) and Craig Primack (of the American Society of Bariatric Physciians here http://www.doctoroz.com/article/hcg-d... and here http://www.doctoroz.com/article/scien.... Simply put, the only people touting the HCG diet are the ones that are SELLING desperate dieters HCG diet treatments!
Some doctors continue to claim that there is a certain protocol to follow in HCG weight loss, including an absurd 500-calorie-per-day diet. Stating that HCG favors fat loss over muscle loss, they continue to encourage patients to inject themselves with the hormone. Not only are they supporting an ineffective therapy, but one that even the FDA and FTC have taken action against regarding HCG drugs marketed for weight loss.
Note: The HCG hormone has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of select cases in female infertility and hormone treatment in men and are only available in injection form as well as mandate a prescription from a licensed medical professional, the FDA stated.
“There are no FDA-approved HCG products for weight loss,” according to the FDA.
Used since the 1950s, this therapy suggests a low-calorie starvation regime, shutting down metabolism, causing hair loss, heart arrhythmias and thyroid complications. Then, once off the hormone, weight gain returns even quicker and more aggressive than prior to therapy.
Please, don’t be desperate.
HCG shouldn’t be a last resort… or any resort for that matter. It is no vacation. There is no easy way to lose weight the right way. Corners cannot be cut to cut the fat.
Nevertheless, healthy, effective, holistic weight loss methods DO exist. What are my three biggest universal weight loss tips to live by?
1 | HYDRATE
Drink plenty of water each day. I suggest that patients carry around a gallon of water with them and try to finish the entire jug by the end of the day.
