Light Weight Tank of Indian Army

In April 2021, The Indian Ministry of Defense had issued an official RFI for the phased purchase of 350 next generation light tanks under make in India scheme of DAP-2020. The army wanted a light tank with combat weight not to exceed 25 tons and feature modular and upgradable main gain, secondary armament for anti-air and ground roles with different calibre and remote assisted weapon station. The army expects the light tank prototype development and trials in three years. It will be packed with cutting-edge technologies including drone integration, active protection systems and superior situational awareness.

Supporting Make-In-India initiative, In March 2022, the lightweight tanks have been moved under the Make-I category of the 2020 Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) by MoD and will be funded by government.

DRDO is the lead development agency for the Lightweight Tank in partnership with L&T as Development cum Production Partners (DcPP). The design & development of Light Tank is being pursued under Project Zorawar - named after a legendary general who led multiple successful victories in Tibet which is now controlled by the Chinese Army.

Technical Specification

The DRDO’s light tank design information was revealed during defence expo-2022. The light tank will have indigenous design and not based on K-9 Vajra chassis as being speculated earlier. It will have approximate combat weight of 25t. It will be manned by crew of 3 and can be easily transported via air, rail, or road. The tank will have amphibious capability as well.

The tank will offer modular protection with bolt-on, retrofittable armour. The tank’s frontal 60-degree arc will have protection of STANAG level 4 and STANAG 2 elsewhere.

The gun will feature a 105mm high pressure tank gun and 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. The 105 mm gun to be featured is expected to be made by Belgian firm John Cockerel Defence SA which can fire at a 42-degree elevation, suited for mountain warfare.

The light tank will be fitted with High Altitude Operable Power pack of 1000hp and capable of firing multiple ammunitions. There are three engines currently being explored for the light tank, which are MTU of Germany, Caterpillar, and Cummins of the US. For transmissions two options are being evaluated which are: Renk of Germany and British firm Allison.

The tank will feature next generation niche technology such as artificial intelligence, drone integration, active protection system and high degree of situational awareness.

Development timeline

On 22th December 2022, DAC has cleared 24 capital acquisition proposals valued at around Rs 85,000 crore, including light tanks, futuristic infantry combat vehicles (FICV), mounted gun systems, drones and minesweeper vessels.

The latest report suggests that Indian army is looking to procure nearly 700 light tanks when it enters into mass production. The initial proposal was for 354 light tanks but the number number of light tanks to be procured has been increased considering the mass production and induction of Type 15 light tanks by Chinese army.

From the initial order of 354 light tanks 59 has been reserved for the DRDO led development of light tank. The remaining 295 tanks will be manufactured under the government-funded design and development project for the Indian industry in the `Make-1’ category of the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP). “ DRDO will also be able to compete in this category with private players.

The Indian Army has strongly pitched for all 354 tanks to be produced by the private sector under the Make-1 category. But the DRDO argued its Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) was already working to develop a light tank prototype with private sector giant Larsen & Toubro as the “lead system integrator”.

DRDO says its first light tank prototype will roll out by mid-2023. So, the decision is that 59 tanks be reserved for DRDO, with the condition that it delivers a successful prototype ahead of the others in the fray.
