How Do Farmers Create New Mango Varieties?

Every year or so we mango enthusiasts get to taste new varieties of mango. By new I don't mean new to us. I mean new! You can travel to Thailand or India and find types of mango you've never seen before but here in south Florida the nurseries are creating net new varieties. I'm talking about first time ever varieties.

Growers dedicate themselves to seedling hunting. They plant thousands of mango seeds in the hopes that one will create a new variety that scores high in all the categories that define a great mango.

In this vid I explain how I came up with the Balliet variety and contrast it to a garbage seedling variety to show what characteristics make a great mango. You can do it too!
