Having long been a mediator in family disputes, including family-owned business disputes, I was aware of Richard’s reputation for being an acclaimed and nationally-known mediator for family and commercial disputes. As he made the transition from litigator to mediator, he combined his talents to focus on family-owned businesses.

Richard Lutringer describes how family-owned businesses are uniquely different from other types of businesses. In his words, he uses the language of ‘two cultures’ coming together and the generational challenges that emerge and spread out through the extended family.

He also addresses factors that contribute to the lack of success for family-owned businesses to survive the transition from one generation to the next as well as examples of those who do survive. Richard taps into the attitudes, biases and distortions that emerge and contribute to conflict, often in unspoken, unconscious ways.
