STORYLINE:
Ceremonies were held throughout Iran on Thursday on the first day of festivities marking the 28th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution that toppled the pro-US Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and brought the hard-line clerics to power.
Many top Iranian officials, including Iran's former president Akbar Hashemieh Rafsanjani, went to the mausoleum of Grand Ayatollah Khomeini, outside Tehran, to pay their respects to the man regarded as the founder of the revolution.
Discussing current events, Rafsanjani, a relative moderate who was president from 1989-1997, said there was "an artificial coalition" of the world's countries aligned against Iran.
He called on Iranians to "defend our rights and also defuse the plots hatched against our country, bravely and wisely."
Last week, Rafsanjani accused the United States of stepping up its confrontation with Iran on several fronts and seeking to undermine his country's economy.
Those comments came as the United States vowed to take greater action to roll back Iranian influence across the Middle East, particularly in Iraq and Lebanon.
Rafsanjani heads the country's Expediency Council, a powerful clerical body, and is a rival of hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
In his speech on Thursday, Rafsanjani said that during the revolution the United States was viewed as the "ruling master" of Iran 's former king.
The anniversary of the revolution is an important annual celebration in Iran.
Amir Aslani, a Tehran resident, said that supporters of the revolution wanted to create change in Iran and consequently in the whole world to benefit the whole of humanity.
The last day of the celebration is February 11, which is known as Iran's National Day.
