He suggests that Trump's father was emotionally cold and authoritarian, and that his older brother died from alcoholism—a common way to cope with pain. According to Maté, Trump's behavior is a desperate attempt to compensate for a deep-seated feeling of weakness and a negative self-image.

The central message of the clip is that a person's behavior is an explanation, not an excuse. Understanding the roots of someone's pain, Maté argues, can lead to empathy and compassion, rather than judgment. He emphasizes that while we are all responsible for our actions, our past experiences play a crucial role in shaping who we become and how we interact with the world.
