Hungary said on Friday it had secured firm guarantees from Russia on continued oil and gas supplies after Prime Minister Viktor Orban held talks with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, despite unease within the European Union. Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said Putin assured Orban that Russia would fully honour its existing contracts, with flows through the Druzhba oil pipeline and the TurkStream gas route operating normally. He added that the commitments would prevent a sharp rise in household energy bills and noted that the United States had earlier allowed Hungary to maintain energy cooperation with Moscow under a sanctions exemption. Szijjarto also reported progress on the Russia-backed expansion of Hungary’s Paks nuclear plant and said Putin had expressed readiness to hold a future Ukraine peace summit in Budapest if one were convened.
