An classic example of a tower house and bawn (a defensive wall surrounding a tower house), built about 1568 at the strategic location where the Newry River flows into Carlingford Lough.

The original fortified wooden structure was built in 1212 by Hugh de Lacy, first Earl of Ulster to prevent attacks on Newry via the river. The tower house was built for the Magennis family by John Sancky and it is a very typical of tower houses built throughout Ireland at the time.

This kind of building, typically rectangular in plan and three or more storeys, contained a series of chambers, with stairs, closets and latrines built within the thick walls. The tower has a ‘murder hole’ above the entrance and it is surrounded by a defensive wall. This was destroyed in the Irish Rebellion of 1641 (an uprising in Ireland by Catholic gentry who wanted to end to anti-Catholic discrimination and have Irish self-governance. It led to the 1641–1653 Irish Confederate Wars). The remains were sold to the Hall family in the 1670s and they occupied it until they built an "Elizabethan revival style" mansion in the early 19th century (the Hall family continue to live there). The original 16th century keep were given into state care in 1956.
