Club-record signing Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien was joined by defender Asier Del Horno and winger Shaun Wright-Phillips in the Chelsea squad and Mourinho's side started where they left off in 2004/05 by winning their first nine Premier League matches, including a 4-1 victory over 2005 UEFA Champions League winners Liverpool.
