An Iranian navy helicopter confronted a U.S. Navy destroyer, the USS Fitzgerald, on Wednesday in the Gulf of Oman, according to Iranian state TV. The U.S. warship reportedly approached Iranian territorial waters around 10 a.m. local time. In response, Iran dispatched a helicopter that flew directly over the ship and warned it to keep its distance. The U.S. vessel allegedly responded by threatening to shoot down the helicopter if it remained in the area. This marks the first reported direct encounter between Iranian and U.S. forces since the recent 12-day Iran-Israel war, during which U.S. B-52 bombers targeted Iranian nuclear sites. Iran stated that its helicopter was fully protected by its integrated air defense system. Eventually, the Fitzgerald retreated southward. The U.S. Central Command has not yet commented on the incident. It remains unclear how close the U.S. ship came to Iranian waters.
