The Rajasthan Legislative Assembly has passed the Rajasthan Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Bill 2025, introducing severe penalties for forced or fraudulent conversions. Offenders face imprisonment of 7 to 14 years and a minimum fine of 5 lakh rupees. For conversions involving minors, women, or individuals from scheduled castes and tribes, the penalty increases to 10 to 20 years with a fine starting at 10 lakh. The law stipulates life imprisonment for mass conversions and for repeat offenders, with fines reaching up to 50 lakh rupees. All offences under this act are non-bailable. Marriages conducted for the purpose of conversion are voided, and a mandatory prior notification to the district magistrate is required for any voluntary conversion. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma stated the law is "essential for protecting vulnerable communities and preserving social harmony."
