A Jewish community was present in Fes, Morocco since its founding in the 9th century. In the 14th and 15th century the desire arose to concentrate the Jews into a specific area of the city, this is how the Mellah was founded. Mellah means "salted land" and as this was the first Jewish quarter in Morocco, the name became applied to all the Jewish quarters of the country. The Mellah was greatly expanded when Jews who were expelled from Spain arrived to the city. The community flourished for centuries, however with the founding of Israel, almost all the Jews have left, with only 150 remaining.
The architecture of the area differs somewhat from the Muslim areas. Here the houses sport open balconies towards the street, however the inside of the houses is the same, an open courtyard surrounded by living areas.
