The longleaf pine ecosystem has gone from a range of 90 million acres to less than 5% of that today. With environmental stewardship programs, habitat restoration utilizing prescribed fire (or controlled burning) is being done by private land owners like Tallahassee Florida's Helen and Tom Roth. After discovering an endangered species on their land, they've taken longleaf restoration into their own hands.

This episode was made possible by the generous support of our friends at Tall Timbers Research Station & Land Conservancy. Tall Timbers is the home of fire ecology, and has worked for over fifty years to promote prescribed fire, research the wildlife of the Fire Forest, and operate as one of the nation's leading land trusts. They've permanently protected and helped manage hundreds of thousands of acres, right in the heart of the longleaf pine's range. We couldn't be more grateful for their support, or more honored to call them a partner.

As an exciting side note, Tom and Helen are working with Tall Timbers to secure a conservation easement on their property, which will permanently protect their little slice of the longleaf pine ecosystem forever.

We've covered a lot of ground to get to the finish line, and hope you've enjoyed taking the journey with us through the fire forest.
